The impact of war on children in Ukraine
In wars, it is always the children who suffer the most – says the famous quote from T.A. Uner. And in Ukraine, the impact of war on children has been devastating. Over 9,000 children have been orphaned, 1.5 million children are at risk of mental health problems, and 5.3 million children face barriers to education.
Anastasia, 14, and her nine-year-old sister Kateryna have seen their lives changed forever by war. A missile struck the car wash where their father worked. Over a month later, he died in hospital from his injuries.
All children have a need for joy
Along with their grief, the family had many challenges to face. Their breadwinner was gone, and the hardship of poverty became more pressing than ever.
Enrolled on Mission Without Borders’s family sponsorship programme, Anastasia and Kateryna were invited to go to summer camp in a beautiful part of western Ukraine.
Tetyana said, “Like all children, my girls have a need for joy, bright emotions and good memories. I cannot give this to them, so I am thankful to the Mission for this opportunity.”
Girls become closer to God at summer camp
Kateryna said, “At first, I didn’t want to go to summer camp, as I’m a little shy, and after my dad died, I often feel sad.
“Now I’m so happy that I did go! I like everything here.
“I learned to read and understand the Bible more. Even though we go to church at home, I didn’t show much interest in it. That has changed here.”

“I feel that I’ve become closer to God,” Anastasia added. “I always have a big need for his care and guidance but trusting him has been difficult for me. I learned that staying in his Word helps you to develop the right mindset.”
Mykola Bogdanets, director of MWB Ukraine, said, “As the war continues to devastate Ukraine, the Mission’s summer camps remain more vital than ever.”
